A new study by Robert Krol (Economics), entitled “Trade, Protectionism, and the U.S. Economy: Examining the Evidence,” has been published by the Cato Institute. The study, described as a “comprehensive review of the important empirical studies that quantify the impact of trade on the economy,” examines data dating back to the end of World War II. A Cato Institute news release says the study “unequivocally shows that the expansion of international trade has been a boon for Americans and the U.S. economy.”
Linda Rader Overman (English) is the author of an essay entitled “Goodbye, Rita Hayworth. Hello, Margarita Cansino,” due to appear in “Reflect, Inform, Persuade: College Writing in the 21st Century,” scheduled for publication by Longman in 2009.
Martin Pousson (English) has sold his story, “Wanted Man,” to Epoch. The story is a chapter from “The Nerves,” Pousson’s novel-in-progress.
In an article published by the Cato Institute, Shirley Svorny (Economics) states that state licensing of medical professionals does not assure quality care. Svorny argues that “licensure not only fails to protect consumers from incompetent physicians, but, by raising barriers to entry, makes health care more expensive and less accessible.” Education, credentialing and scope-of-practice decisions are better left to the private sector and the courts, she notes.
Nayereh Tohidi (Gender and Women’s Studies) wrote a commentary for Women’s E News entitled “Iran’s Women’s Rights Activists are Being Smeared.” In the September 17 commentary, Tohidi said Iranian women’s rights activists have faced smears and arrests in their move to stall a bill easing “polygamy, temporary marriage and male-bias in divorce.”

James Decker (Social Work) is principal investigator on two grants to the Department of Social Work beginning July 1, 2008, through June 30, 2009. The first, a $967,643 state Title IV-E Training Grant, will train 13 full-time and eight part-time MSW students in child welfare. The second, a $456,709 Los Angeles County IUC Child Welfare Grant, will train eight students in child welfare for the Department of Children and Family Services.

Scott Plunkett (Family and Consumer Sciences) and two colleagues from North Carolina State University and Oklahoma State University received $457,278 ($114,693 to CSUN) from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, in support of a project entitled “Fathers Count.” Plunkett also received $121,685 from North Carolina State University in support of the "Fathers Count" project.
Dora Preminger and Gary Chapman (Physics and Astronomy) received $22,952 from NASA, in support of a project entitled “Magnetic Origins of Solar Irradiance Variations.”
Ramin Roosta (Electrical and Computer Engineering) received $20,000 from the Northrop Grumman Corporation, in support of a project entitled “Power-aware design planning and physical implementation for effective power reduction.”
Robert Ryan (Mechanical Engineering) received $19,856 from DMJM Harris, in support of a project entitled “Fume Hood Exhaust System for Science 3 and 4.”
Mark Sergi (Psychology) received $26,597 from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia & Depression, in continuing support of a project entitled “Improving Skill Acquisition in Schizophrenia: Neurocognitive Prediction of Effective Instruction.”
Debra Sheets (Health Sciences) received $20,171 from UCLA, in support of a project entitled “California Geriatric Education Center.”
Yohannes Shiferaw (Physics and Astronomy) received $75,087 from the American Heart Association, in support of a project entitled “Stochastic Calcium Signaling and Cardiac Arrhythmia.”
Gerry Simila (Geological Sciences), Virginia Vandergon (Biology) and Steve Oppenheimer (Biology) have received $24,612 from the UC Regents, in support of a project entitled “San Fernando Valley Science Project” and $20,000 in additional funding for the “San Fernando Valley Science Project—Supplement.”
Mark Steele and Larry Allen (Biology) have received $175,670 from the California Coastal Commission, in continuing support of a project entitled "SONGS Mitigation Monitoring Program (2008-2009)."
Yifei Sun (Geography) has received $18,937 from the National Science Foundation, in continuing support of a project entitled "Collaborative Research: A Comparative Study of ICT Industry Development in Beijing, Shanghi-Suzhou Corridor and Pearl River Delta in China."
John Van Arsdale (Recreation and Tourism Management) has received $40,000 fom the California Department of Boating and Waterways, in connection with the CSUN Aquatic Center at Castaic Lake. The center acts as a learning center for CSUN students, and a community program outreach center focusing on water safety and aquatics for communities in the Santa Clarita valley
Ann Watkins (Mathematics) received $30,975 from Western Michigan University, in continuing support of a project entitled “Core-Plus Mathematics Revision Project.”
Ivor Weiner (Special Education) received $209,351 from the California Department of Education, in continuing support of a project entitled “Family Focus Center–Family Empowerment.” He also received $73,955 from the North Los Angeles County Regional Center, Inc., in continuing support of a project entitled “The Family Focus Resource Center” and $48,766 from the North Los Angeles County Regional Center, Inc., in continuing support of a project entitled “Family Focus Resource Center Antelope Valley.”
